In most Pennsylvania counties, the chief medicolegal death investigator is an elected coroner. Pennsylvania's coroners are elected to serve a 4-year term.
In counties in which the position is not elected, the chief medicolegal death investigator is appointed by county administration, and may be a coroner or medical examiner, depending on the county's type of government.
