The Pennsylvania State Coroners’ Association is an advocate for continued, meaningful education.
In Pennsylvania, coroners and medical examiners and their chief deputies (or deputy agency directors) are required to be certified by the Coroners’ Education Board, which itself is overseen by the Office of the Attorney General.
Following certification; coroners, medical examiners1 and their deputies must keep their knowledge and training up-to-date with yearly education, or forfeit their certification (and therefore the ability to serve.)
The Coroners’ Education Board reviews and approves topics which it deems appropriate quarterly, and determines the number of credit-hours each program may award the attendee.
This continuing education begins with the most modern developments in forensic medicine and pathology.
In addition to medical information, these trainings make your coroner or medical examiner specialized in traumatic and unexpected deaths: topics such as fatal fire death investigation, blood pattern interpretation, advanced homicide investigation, child death investigation, mass fatality event management, firearms and toolmark training, incised wounds, and blunt and sharp force trauma.
