Elected Coroners: Of the 67 counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 62 have elected county coroners.

Medical Examiners: Allegheny, Delaware and Philadelphia counties each have an appointed medical examiner.

Appointed Coroners: Northampton and Luzerne counties each have an appointed coroner.


Pennsylvania leads the nation in accreditation with 6 accredited county death investigation offices. One office holds a dual-accreditation.

Nationally, IACME reports 40 accredited offices nationwide; 5 are Pennsylvania coroner’s offices.
