Pennsylvania’s Death Investigation System
Elected Coroners: Of the 67 counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 62 have elected county coroners.
Medical Examiners: Allegheny, Delaware and Philadelphia counties each have an appointed medical examiner.
Appointed Coroners: Northampton and Luzerne counties each have an appointed coroner.
Oversight and Resources
The Pennsylvania State Coroners’ Association does not oversee Pennsylvania’s coroners/medical examiners. Pennsylvania’s death investigators, by design, are independent investigative agencies. However, the PSCA does publish standards and practices, and members of the Association are obligated to follow the Code of Conduct.
